DESCRIPTION
The building, which houses a 1,500-seat opera house and a 2,000-seat concert hall, consists of four simple cubic volumes set on a large platform, itself built on stilts. This strict geometric organization is offset by the emergence of two vertical volumes in its center.
The building’s design is based on a grid system, with each block having a specific function (opera, concert hall, technical services, etc.). The hierarchy defined by the layout of the different spaces echoes the tradition of Korean Buddhist temples, reinterpreted through the use of new materials and the large-scale resizing of the building. Copper, one of the purest minerals, is used as the dominant color for the facades. The basic volume of the project is thus made visible by a processing unit. Only gradual variations in density in the perforations enliven this stack of monoliths. During the day, the building’s skin sparkles as it follows the movements of the sun. At night, light filters through the walls from the inside to the outside, offering the city the image of a jewel suspended above the Han River.
