PIAZZA GARIBALDI
NAPLES
ITALY, 2004-2019
MASTERPLAN
PR–573
As part of the transformation of Piazza Garibaldi and the addition of a new metro station to the system, a large, open-air gallery has been built eight meters below the surface of the square.
PROGRAM
On the surface, the redevelopment of Piazza Garibaldi reorganizes and calms road traffic while introducing a garden and pedestrian areas. A long open-air gallery houses shops and a flower market, and provides direct access to the multimodal hub connecting the new metro station with the five other stations nearby.

DESCRIPTION
This monumental trench crosses the void from one side to the other, slipping underground to connect to the complex network of galleries linking the many stations of this intermodal hub. Emphasizing the historic axis that stretches from the train station to the statue of Garibaldi, large metal trees spread their branches to shade both the underground gallery and its surroundings above ground. In the central shaft of the metro station, the circulation routes bend, turn and interact with the lights of the Neapolitan sky, which filter down to the platforms through the city’s ground.
