La Liberté is a new piece of architecture in the urban landscape, enriching a collection of signature buildings scattered throughout the city of Groningen.
PROGRAM
The La Liberté complex consists of two buildings, each set on a glass base.
They are connected by a footbridge on the third floor and house a mixed-use development comprising residential units, including some social housing, a hotel, and offices in the lower section. The project also includes an ecological garden and a public green space on the ground floor.

DESCRIPTION
This ambitious project combines social housing and a hotel on top of an office base: the structure consists of a stack of cubes connected by an oblong, elevated platform, marking the transition between the hotel and residential areas. This balanced composition of volumes gives the building a sculptural dynamic, reinforced by a play of materials: depending on the facade, the brick varies in shades of white, gray, or brown. To capture the northern light and integrate the housing into its environment, thin volumes of mirror-polished metal are grafted perpendicularly onto the vertical walls, multiplying the reflections and extending the landscape into the interior spaces.
