TOWER
PR–635
In Basel, the extension to the Bank for International Settlements (BIS) is a continuation of the existing metal building, which was carefully designed and built by architect Martin Burckhardt between 1972 and 1977.
PROGRAM
The extension and modernization of the BIS tower, designed by Martin Burckhardt in the 1970s, takes the form of a twin building connected to the historic building by a shared base. The first phase of the extension brings employees together on this single site, providing 680 additional workstations. A second, later phase will increase this capacity by adding additional floors to the new tower. Working comfort is improved thanks to natural lighting and ventilation, panoramic views, and the creation of modular meeting and conference rooms equipped with the latest technology.

DESCRIPTION
The project envisions the current tower as a root, from which emerges a twin building that respects the original architectural style. The complex is fused together by an organic base, sculpted to form a new, coherent urban block. This junction gives rise to a structure where a series of terraced gardens gradually rise up, accompanying the emergence of the two twin towers. Beyond the formal intervention, the project carries an ethical message: that of working with the legacies of the past in order to extend and enhance them.
