DESCRIPTION
Its distinctive feature is that it occupies only a small portion of the available land, freeing up space for passersby, but also for the museum, which can use it as an outdoor exhibition site. The idea here is to affirm the desire to make the museum a place that is open to society.
At the heart of the building, designed as a box within a box, the large gallery extends over two floors and, like every space in the extension, functions in a completely flexible and autonomous manner. Despite the contrast between the two buildings, the link with the existing museum is easily made thanks to vertical circulation connecting the first four levels. On the top floor, the reading room is protected from the sun by the roof overhang, on which a terrace overlooking the landscape is installed. The “double skin” facades are entirely glazed, naturally ventilated, and protected by removable opaque panels. While the rear facade, devoted to logistical requirements, is left exposed, the main facade is partially concealed by a golden metal mesh. This monumental stage curtain magnifies the space and, thanks to its inclination, creates an intermediate space between the square and the museum, a sort of buffer zone where passersby and visitors are invited to stroll.
