57 Métal-Métal 57: The story of a mutation

Publication by HYX Editions

Through numerous testimonies, graphic documents and essays, the book traces the history of this iconic building of the 1980s, located along the Seine in Boulogne-Billancourt, from the genesis of its construction to the two phases of reconversion.
Designed by architect Claude Vasconi and delivered in 1984, the original building was designed to house a Renault factory workshop. Major piece of the industrial architectural heritage in Ile-de-France, the volume had to be demolished after a first conversion in 2004 by architects Jakob + MacFarlane. Finally, the building will be reborn again through a new refurbishment project led by Dominique Perrault for BNP Paribas Real Estate. It will reopen in 2024. The project preserves the characteristics sheds of the initial volume and develops a new entity, an extension that will integrate offices, services and activities. It is now a question of transforming the "57 Metal" into the "Metal 57", an emblematic building of new uses. An office building carrying experimentation, a workplace open to the city, revisited and enhanced by contemporary architecture.
